Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal Mesothelioma by Todd Going

Peritoneal mesothelioma is one of the deadliest and most painful forms of cancer.

Fortunately it is also one of the rarer forms of a relatively uncommon cancer, though that is small comfort to the thousands of people that must endure it every day.

This terminal condition begins when a person ingests the microscopic jagged asbestos fibers.

Asbestos is a naturally-occurring, fibrous mineral that has been used in fireproofing and insulation for millennia, and even since these ancient times those that worked with asbestos tended to die even earlier than other people did.

During the manufacturing process asbestos fibers are often released into the air, where their light weight and small size allows them to settle in the mouths and throats of anyone nearby, and they can even be carried home where they can contaminate the friends and family of the original worker.

Peritoneal mesothelioma begins when asbestos fibers enter the digestive track and slice through the tissues of the stomach and intestines.

These fibers shred through these organs and protrude through them and puncture the peritoneal mesothelium, the delicate membrane that secretes the lubrication that allows them to move during digestion.

Without this vital lubrication the organs could not process food properly. Some of the symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include:

• Abdominal pain

• Abdominal mass

• Weight loss

• Abnormal bowel function

• Fluid buildup in the abdomen

• Expanding waistline but losing weight

• Blood clots

Unfortunately, peritoneal mesothelioma does not usually present symptoms until it is extremely advanced, and by that time it is usually impossible to treat.

Further complicating diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma is the nature of the disease itself; the symptoms are often confused with less dangerous conditions such as indigestion or heartburn.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is always fatal.

By the time it is diagnosed it is usually so advanced that the only treatment available is to make the victim as comfortable as possible and relieve as much pain as they can.

Most victims usually succumb within six to eight months after diagnosis; a few cases manage to survive longer than a year, but few if any survive longer than five years.

There is hope for victims of peritoneal mesothelioma.

New treatments include photodynamic, gene, angiogenesis, and immunotherapy that could hold the key to turning the tide on this deadly, debilitating, and tragic disease..

Survivor Panel 7: Placing our bets

Survivor Panel 7: Placing our bets by Brad Frenette

Maryam Yay! Tracy's gone. She and her way too big fake boobs were irritating (also scaring) me. Next, I'd like Cirie to walk the plank, if only because she raises her eyebrows (raise) all (raise) the time (raise). And she needs to quit crying about not being comfortable near water. Why would anyone go on Survivor TWICE if they're not cool with open water?!

Jason I'm also not sorry to see her go, and I'll grant that it was the height of stupidity for Cirie to loudly complain about being "out at sea" when there was a boat full of cameras (and I'm guessing rescue personnel) floating right next to their faux-indigenous canoe. She needs to stuff a coconut husk in it. And speaking of the Survivor meal-of-choice, I don't know how much more Erik I can handle. I mean, a coconut tutorial with Ozzie? How precious. You really can't blame Cirie for being disgusted with that.

Mark The fans are being picked off one-by-one. Even Ozzy and Erik's man crushing won't save the shaggy hair lad for long. He might be next. Here's what I don't get: after beating out millions (okay thousands) of other entries and being chosen for the show AND lasting 19 days, why would you suddenly quit? I knew Kathy was crazy, but this time she flew over the cuckoo's nest.

Brad Mark, I concur. Why would she take the spot, or rather, why was she given a spot over what must have been plenty of other Survivor wanna-bes? Perhaps it was the fact that she wasn’t, for the first time, picked by her team to go to Exile Island. Maybe she felt too wanted. And while I hadn’t really noticed how many times Cirie raised her eyebrows,

Maryam, I’m certain it will be all I notice during the next episode.Maryam Sorry Brad. But perhaps we can make this panel a little more lucrative, and take bets on how many times those brows will head to the sky? I think Erik will stick around for at least one more week, if only because he’s male. But I’m interested in seeing Parvati start to work her magic on the ladies of her tribe. I really didn’t like Parvati on Cook Islands, but she’s grown on me. She’s been under the radar since the tribe mix-up, which can only work in her favour.

Jason "I'm never leaving my baby girl or my husband again, for this amount of time ever again." That amount of family values on a game show that isn’t Family Feud is ridiculous. In fact, I have to say, that after defending Krazy Kathy for the first six weeks, I’m beside myself that she could end being a bigger wuss than Joel was a lout. Having said that, I think the real reason why Kathy left was because she was sick of her tribe and their meaningless bickering. I agree: She didn’t seem like Survivor material, but you could say that about Cirie too (she couldn’t tell left from right during the challenge), and she’s a fave. Fare thee well gentle golf course vendor.

Mark I haven’t seen the show in a few years, so I don’t know if they still do that montage in the last episode of all the eliminated contestants. I’m trying to think what clips they will show for Kathy: either her on Exile Island (which I think should be renamed Kathy’s Island) or her crying. Or her crying ON Exile Island. Speaking of wagers, Maryam, anyone want to bet on who makes the final four? I think we’re far enough along to start speculating...

Brad Ok, I’m in. A coconut, some tree bark and a half a chicken on the final four as: Parvati, Ozzy, Amanda and my wild card, Nathalie.

Jason I’ll see your tree bark and raise you a bottle of Herbal Essences shampoo: Cirie, Parvati, Amanda and my wildcard: Eliza. Ozzy doesn’t stand a chance against a bunch of gals who are essentially afraid of him. This is truly a game that you can end up losing when you play too well.

Mark Although I think it’ll go all-girls for the final four, I’ll go with Cirie, Parvati, Eliza, and James.

Kimberley Locke

Kimberley Locke
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kimberley Dawn Locke (born January 3, 1978 in Hartsville, Tennessee) is an American adult contemporary pop/R&B singer and plus-size fashion model. In recent years, Locke has had eight Top 20 Adult Contemporary hits, and seven # 1's across various Billboard charts.

She gained fame with her participation in the 2003 American Idol television series, and in 2007 garnered media attention for her participation in Celebrity Fit Club.

Early life

Locke was born to Donald and Christine Locke, respectively a truck driver and a clothing warehouse worker for the Gap/Old Navy distribution center in Gallatin, Tennessee. She is the second of two children, with an older brother named Ashley (both of whom are biracial; their father is African-American and their mother is white). She and her brother spent most of their life in Gallatin. At age five, Locke began singing in church. Her parents divorced when she was eight years old.

Locke grew up admiring such singers as Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle and Diana Ross. In 1987, she and childhood friends Chandra Boone, Selina Robb, and NaCole Rice formed a quartet named Shadz of U, which performed at many local churches. The group later appeared on Locke's 2007 'Based On A True Story' album, singing backup on 'Everyday Angels'.
Locke went to Gallatin High School, where she was one of sixteen members to participate in its performing group. She remained in the group throughout her high-school years. She was also selected twice as a member of the All-Middle State Chorus. After graduating, she began to work for a company in Nashville as an administrative assistant.

Like 2007 American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle, Locke is an alumna of Belmont University in Nashville

Locke successfully passed through to the next round, and in December was chosen to perform on the show. She finished third, behind runner up Clay Aiken and eventual champion Ruben Studdard. Simon Cowell at first criticized Locke as lacking in personality; by the final three however, he declared her, Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard to be as worthy winners as any.

Locke went on to sign a record deal with Curb Records on September 6, 2003. Her debut album, One Love, was released May 4, 2004. Debut single "8th World Wonder" reached the top half of the Billboard Hot 100 and was successful on other charts, and even entered the UK chart with little promotion. "Wrong" and "I Could" followed as singles and were hits on the Pop and Adult Contemporary charts respectively. "Coulda Been" was the album's only single not to chart.

Locke released her version of "Up On The Housetop" in Fall 2005 and by the end of year it had reached the top spot of the AC charts and broke many records, due to its quick rise to the top. The following year, Kimberley's version of "Jingle Bells" was released and topped the same charts. A full Christmas album entitled Christmas was released on November 6, 2007.

Locke's second album, Based On A True Story, was released on May 1, 2007. The album's original lead single, "Supawoman", co-written with her producers Damon Sharpe and Mark J. Feist, was released to radio August 7, 2006, however after underwhelming radio support, Curb Records decided to refocus. "Change", was released to radio on January 15, 2007 to positive support and climbed the charts well into the summer of 2007. The album's next single is a cover of Freda Payne's "Band Of Gold", which was released to radio on August 13, 2007 and became Locke's 6th solo Adult Contemporary Top 10 hit. The album's third single has been announced to be "Fall", a song also recorded by country music artist Clay Walker, which is being released to radio in February 2008

Tuatara declared world's fastest evolving animal

Tuatara declared world's fastest evolving animal
By MICHAEL FIELD - Fairfax Media

Although tuatara have remained largely physically unchanged during very long periods of evolution, the researchers found the animals are evolving at a DNA level faster than any other animal

The discovery, reported in the international journal Trends in Genetics, was made by scientists at Massey University's Allan Wilson Center for Molecular Ecology and Evolution in Auckland.

They have taken DNA sequences from the bones of ancient tuatara up to 8,000 years old.
They reported the tuatara has the highest molecular evolutionary measured, changing than any other animal, including bears, lions, ox and horses.

Research found the tuatara is evolving at an average rate of 1.56 substitutions per nucleotide per million years.

This measurement puts it above the previous fast-evolving record holder, the Adelie penguin.
The paper was authored by Massey's Professor David Lambert and researchers Jennifer Hay, Sankar Subramanian, Craig Millar and Elmira Mohandesan.

They have measured the evolution rates of various species, and plan to extend their work to humans, sampling DNA from human mummies from the Andes and Siberia.

Mega-quake risk to rise in April

Mega-quake risk to rise in April
By Jeff Nagel - BC Local News - March 26, 2008

The chances of a massive earthquake striking B.C.'s south coast will be somewhat higher than normal in April.

Seismologists project the region will soon enter another period of what they call "episodic tremor and slip" (ETS) activity.

ETS periods happen every 14 months and are marked by more small tremors and increased movement as the Juan de Fuca plate grinds underneath the North American plate along what's known as the Cascadia subduction zone.

The fault that slopes down beneath Vancouver Island comes under increased pressure at such times and that's also when seismologists think it's more likely there could be a major movement of the plates, causing a "megathrust" earthquake.

"Each time we have one of these events an increment of stress gets added," explained Garry Rogers, an earthquake scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada.

"So it's like a staircase and we go up the staircase one step or we add a straw to the camel's back. At some point the camel's back is going to break and we think that rather than at some random time it will break when you add a straw."

The result will be a giant subduction zone quake of magnitude 9 or more, likely coupled with a potentially devastating tsunami.

That type of earthquake last struck on Jan. 26, 1700, wiping out aboriginal villages and sending a tsunami across the Pacific that devastated Japan.

Rogers said the current forecast is for a two-week ETS period to occur around mid-April.
While he said it brings a "small increase in probability of a subduction earthquake" it's not yet considered a useful way to forecast seismic risk or predict when earthquakes will strike – the holy grail of seismology.

"We're a long ways from that yet," he said. "But it's got all kinds of people excited and all kinds of people pursuing research in that direction."

The challenge is that since the first discovery of the ETS phenomenon here by a team of scientists including Rogers, similar patterns have been detected along fault lines elsewhere.
And the Cascadia subduction zone underneath B.C.'s coast doesn't operate in isolation – it extends south all the way to California.

"Cascadia mostly fails in giant magnitude 9 earthquakes that rupture the entire 1,000-kilometre subduction zone rather than in smaller earthquakes affecting only certain regions," Rogers explained.

ETS activity in other parts of the fault often happens at different times than in B.C. An 11-month cycle has been observed in California, for instance,

That means the super quake could start off Oregon or California rather than here, but rip its way up the coast to B.C. even when this area might be in a theoretical "safer" time.

About a third of the time some portion of the zone is undergoing increased ETS stress, Rogers added.

"If we knew where it was going to start then this would be very significant," he said, but added it's still a "giant leap in understanding."

Rogers doesn't advise his friends or family to head for safer ground at riskier times.
"Stay around – it could be exciting," he joked.

He stressed the more probable source of major damage here is not an extremely rare and deep underground "monster" subduction quake, but rather more common earthquakes that are less powerful but felt more intensely because they happen closer to the surface.

They include quakes like ones in 1918 and 1946 on Vancouver Island, as well as the magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Kobe, Japan that killed 4,600 people and caused $200 billion of damage in 1995.

"Putting an earthquake like that next to an urban community would cause humongous damage," he said.

Episodic tremor and slip activity gives no insight into when that type of quake could strike, he said.

Statistically, he added, there's about a 20 per cent chance of a close, damaging quake happening over the course of a lifetime.

COLLIDING PLATES

To find out what's going on 30 kilometres beneath Vancouver Island, researchers rely on help from 20,000 kilometres overhead.

A network of GPS satellites are used to precisely track the movement of monitoring stations on the ground.

Vancouver Island usually moves east a few millimetres per year.

But the instruments show that every 14 months at episodic tremor and slip (ETS) periods, the monitoring sites reverse direction and and travel west towards Japan several centimetres over the course of two weeks.

The movement is the result of the slipping of the offshore Juan de Fuca plate underneath the North American plate.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

- Be ready for disaster with a ready-to-go emergency kit and enough food and water stockpiled to last a minimum of 72 hours.

Mastering The Skills Of Chakra Meditation

Mastering The Skills Of Chakra Meditation By: Nigel M

Meditation comes in many different styles and one of these is becoming very popular. The number of people practicing Chakra Meditation is increasing and this is mainly due to the fact that it is easy to learn.

Not only is Chakra Meditation easy to learn but the techniques are easy to remember. Once people have learnt these techniques they don’t want to study any other methods of meditation.

Chakra Meditation focuses on various parts of our body such as your head, heart or any of your major organs. Essentially there are seven chakras situated throughout your body and these are the: heart, navel, perineum, eyebrows or forehead, swadhisthana, throat and the top of your head.

The main chakra point is situated at the bottom of your spine and this is reffered to as your coccyx. The chakras situated within your body are all very important as they are linked to your security and health.

It is normal for people who study Chakra Meditation to be taught that the Chakra is an unseen energy that is situated at the centre of our nervous system which starts at the beginning of the spinal column and runs through your entire body to the top of your head.

Actually many people believe that it is the biophysical energy of a person's body.

As with all styles of meditation, when practicing Chakra Meditation, there are a number of steps that you should follow, especially if you have just started meditating or you are learning how to meditate on your own.

The most important beginner steps to Chakra Meditation are:

1. Chakra Meditation can be done when you are sitting or laying down.

2. You should be comfortable whilst meditating so get into a comfortable position and adjust your clothing.

3. Close your eyes. This will help you to concentrate.

4. Keep your breathing slow, deep and relaxed. Don’t try to control your breathing, just breath naturally and calmly.

5. Locate your spinal passage and become aware of it.

6. Start to concentrate on the areas of all of your chakras whilst meditating.

7. End your meditation session by chanting “Om” three times.

Meditation is very good for the body, mind and soul. Chakra Meditation can help to assist in increasing mental energy, especially if you do not currently do enough physical exercise.

As you will aquire more mental energy you will be able to concentrate on various tasks for longer periods of time and you will be able to solve more complex issues with ease.

This will definitely help you in your everyday life whilst coping with the usual stresses of home and work.

What could you do with your spare time if you were able to do all of your jobs and chores more quickly each day?As with a lot of things in life it is important to do things properly, so try consulting a professional for advice and guidance or reading some books on Chakra Meditation.

These things will help you to achieve your meditation goals more quickly and ensure you are in the best of health whilst being on the path to enlightenment.

Making A Fashion Statement With Mobile Phone Accessories

Making A Fashion Statement With Mobile Phone Accessories By: Dru Peacock

If you’ve just bought yourself a brand new mobile phone then you might be wondering what sort of exciting accessories you can buy to make it look even better.

There are so many different mobile phone accessories to choose from that it can be difficult. If you have chosen to buy a big brand mobile phone then it will be possible for you to purchase authentic mobile phone accessories, such as mobile covers, headsets, and cases. However this doesn’t mean that you have to stick to them

Mobile phone jewelery is very popular at the moment, and by that I mean the dangly straps and pretty things that you can add to your phone.

These are available for pretty much any type of phone; you just need a hole in the case!It used to be very popular to change the phone cover itself, however that doesn’t seem quite as important now.

I can’t actually think of one phone that you can easily change the covers on. Of course there are aftermarket cases that can be added fairly easily with a bit of knowhow and a torx screwdriver, but these aren’t recommended! You might just want a simple Bluetooth headset; there are many different types available.

In case you didn’t know Bluetooth is the industry standard for wireless communication, it can be used not only for headsets but it can also be used to transmit files and connect your phone to a computer. Some phones even support stereo Bluetooth hands free kits, which are especially useful if you have a phone capable of playing back MP3’s.

Bluetooth used to be a fairly rare thing to see on a phone, however these days virtually every single phone has Bluetooth as standard. If you’re looking for some great mobile phone accessories then you should be able to find some really good deals by looking on the Internet.

You can also visit your local phone store of course, however the choice will be much more limited.Everybody longs to have a unique phone which is why the personalization of phones is so popular, there are so many different ways that we can customize our phones now, we can use accessories and we can change the wallpaper or the ringtones very easily with modern phones.

Whatever you choose to customize your phone with make sure you invest in high quality accessories. It might be worthwhile choosing only genuine accessories.

Your Cell Phone And The Environment

Your Cell Phone And The Environment

An astonishing number of people own and use a cell phone (celular), with current figures totaling over 800 million worldwide.

It has has become an important part of daily life, and improves business and travel opportunities, whilst providing the best possible level of communication across the globe. However, the high numbers of users are also subject to changing trends for a number of reasons including improved features, fashion and accessories. This means that upgrades are a regular occurrence, with each device being used for an estimated 12 to 18 months. This means that there is a lot of cell phone waste.

Many users are not aware of the potential damage to the environment that incorrect disposal of cell phones (celular) can cause. Incorrect disposal means throwing any cell phone away, which is the typical fate assigned to an unwanted device. However, components within it can have a terrible impact on the environment and so need special disposal.

All cell phones (celular) contain persistent metals which do not degrade in the environment. They also contain bioaccumulative metals which become toxic over period of time. For instance, cadmium which is present in a cell phone (celular) is significant enough to cause damage in small doses.

It is the seventh most harmful known chemical, and is capable of causing cancer. Cell phones also contain lead which causes liver damage in adults and neurological development problems in children when entered into the bloodstream. Other hazardous substances such as nickel and mercury provide further cause for concern. If not disposed of properly, the metals from the cell phone (celular) can leak into the environment through corrosion and cause a series of problems in the environment.

If thrown away, it will go to a landfill where it will remain. As many elements do not decompose, the level of harmful toxins increases and so does the potential damage. Lithium can burn with water exposure, and so can potentially begin underground fires when present in large quantities. Any of the hazardous or poisonous substances could contaminate local water supplies or the nearby soil.

If either of these is affected than the toxins enter the food chain with terrible results. In effect, incorrect disposal of the cell phone (celular) can create a form of poisoning. The immediate effects include health problems such as genetic or reproductive defects and detrimental effects upon the nervous system and delayed general development. The long term effect is global pollution.

When waste that can not be broken down properly such as that in a cell phone (celular) is decomposing it creates methane gas. Methane gas is more damaging than CO2 and so has major impact on global warming. Not many people realize that all this can be caused by disposing it in an incorrect manner. The best way to combat cell phone (celular) damage to the environment is to recycle it by returning it to a shop.

This includes the accessories also. Some shops will ensure the product is sent to developing countries for reuse. Others will reclaim the metal parts to prevent them going into a landfill. Some cell phone companies even make a charity donation for every recycled device to encourage the practice.

The other possibility is that they will ensure the product is sent for proper disposal. This includes disposal of hazardous materials. Whichever option is used, the positive side effect is that less hazardous waste goes into the environment. Now that you know the facts, make sure that you dispose of your cell phone (celular) properly and remain environmentally sound with this one simple gesture.

Realize That You Already Possess Time Management Skills

Realize That You Already Possess Time Management Skills by blueboy

I am a big fan of audio books that I find on the Internet. I use them for entertainment and for new information.

One area that I have been looking into lately is a way to improve my time management skills. It may be suprising that time management skills are more important for people who work at home than those who go to a traditional workplace.

I recently made the transition to do telecommuting, and found myself looking through the audio book selections on the Internet to find a good tutorial on basic time management skills.

My first audio book was very encouraging, and promised me that I am already using time management skills every single day.

And it is true that even though I’ve never had a class on time management, I have a way to plan each day.

Typically the items that have a time requirement get put in first: the time the kids must be at school, the time work starts, and the time the kids need to be picked up.

Of course, my work time has become more flexible than before. Other things just make sense, like serving breakfast after everyone gets up and before they leave the house.

The instructor on the audio book said to review how I already scheduled each day, and make sure to keep the good parts of these as they were.

The biggest challenge for anyone with undeveloped time management skills is the day without imposed structures. The audio book program suggested tackling a typical Saturday, where most of the time requirements of job and school are gone for the day.

There might be some soccer matches or dance classes, but there are large chunks of time that can be used for things that are important to my family.

One important reminder from the audio book instructor was to make sure to schedule seemingly unimportant things that are still very meaningful, such as my nightly evening walk with my family.

This particular activity is so beneficial to us, since we get exercise, we wind down after a long day, and we get to talk with each other without any distractions from TV or homework. It is also a high priority for me since it carries on a tradition started in my family when I was a little girl, nearly forty years ago.

Another tip from the audio book instructor is to involve your family in the scheduling process. It might be best for each family member to make their own list of things they would like to schedule into a Saturday, and then come together to talk about them.

Even the youngest members have a suggestion or two on what they would like to do. When your family comes together, realize that there will be too many ideas to fit into one day.

Don’t hold too tightly to your own list, and keep an open mind for new suggestions. One of the main emphases of the audio book program was that good time management skills were to be used to create an enjoyable life, not one that was highly efficient with as many activities crammed in as possible.

The audio book program ended with this advice, and I end with the same advice: the end result of a good time management program should be a life that is truly satisfying, meaningful, and enjoyable
